El Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz & Más encara su tercera y última semana con la actuación de una de las formaciones estelares de esta 29ª edición, Atom String Quartet, con dos conciertos que tendrán lugar en el Teatro Pérez Galdós de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (martes 11, 20.30 horas) y en el Teatro Leal de La Laguna (miércoles 12, 20.30 horas). Tras dos semanas intensas, en las que el festival ha ido cumpliendo con sus objetivos, fundamentalmente en el plano de seguridad sanitaria, llega a la recta final con la satisfacción de haber llenado en todas las plazas, auditorios y teatros en los que han tenido lugar los primeros conciertos, agradeciendo además el comportamiento ejemplar de músicos y público, que han ofrecido hasta la fecha un total respeto a las normas establecidas por ley en esta nueva normalidad.

La semana se abre con un plato fuerte, una doble cita con la formación polaca Atom String Quartet, uno de los cuartetos de cuerda más intrigantes del mundo y también una de las mejores bandas de jazz polacas. El grupo combina las capacidades de un cuarteto de cuerda (es decir, dos violines, viola y violonchelo) con la improvisación en su sentido más amplio. El conjunto de instrumentos de un conjunto de música de cámara, que es el más clásico y está firmemente establecido en la tradición musical, permite a los artistas buscar nuevos sonidos y logros formales. Es difícil definir, de manera explícita, el estilo musical del grupo. Su producción musical, además del jazz, muestra fuentes de inspiración provenientes del folk polaco, música de varias regiones del mundo y también música contemporánea y clásica.

El cuarteto se estableció en Varsovia en 2010 y está creado por los violinistas Dawid Lubowicz y Mateusz Smoczyński; el violista Michał Zaborski; y el violonchelista Krzysztof Lenczowski. Todos se graduaron de la Universidad de Música Frederic Chopin de Varsovia. Desde que ganó el Gran Premio del 13º Festival de Jazz Bielska Zadymka en 2011, la banda se presenta constantemente en los mejores festivales de música del mundo. Atom String Quartet es también el primer grupo polaco que tocó dos veces en la feria europea de jazz jazzahead! en Bremen (2015 y 2018). En 2018, el cuarteto tocó en el famoso Carnegie Hall de Nueva York en el proyecto Voices of the Mountains.

El grupo ha grabado cinco discos originales. Fade In (2011), Places (2012), AtomSPHERE (2015) Seifert (2017) y PENDERECKI (2019) que contiene música de Krzysztof Penderecki, el compositor polaco más famoso de nuestros tiempos. Además han grabado con la NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra dos álbumes, Made in Poland y Supernova. La discografía de la banda también contiene importantes álbumes de conciertos en vivo con proyectos especiales. Los músicos de Atom String Quartet han sido invitados de manera constante a las sesiones de grabación de otros artistas y ha recibido numerosos premios a lo largo de su carrera.

The Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz & Más addresses its third & final week with the performance of one of the star groups at this 29th edition, the Atom String Quartet, with two concerts which will be staged at the Pérez Galdós Theatre in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Tuesday 11, 20.30 hours) and the Leal Theatre in La Laguna (Wednesday 12, 20.30 hours). Following two intensive weeks, in which the Festival has been fulfilling its aims, principally with respect to health safety measures, it reaches its final stage with the satisfaction of having filled all the respective venues, i.e. public squares, auditoriums & theatres where the initial concerts took place, also expressing its gratitude for the exemplary behaviour of both musicians & audience, who to date have shown total respect in regard to the regulations established by law in compliance with this ‘new normality’.

The week kicks off with a double concert by Atom String Quartet, one of the most intriguing string quartets in the world, and also one of best Polish jazz bands. The group combines the capabilities of a string quartet (i.e. two violins, viola and cello) with improvisation in its broadest sense. The set of instruments of a chamber music ensemble, which is most classic and firmly established in musical tradition, enables the artists to search for new sound and formal achievements. It is difficult to define, in an explicit way, the group’s musical style. Its musical output, besides jazz, shows sources of inspiration coming from Polish folk, music of various regions of the world, and also contemporary and classical music.

The quartet was established in Warsaw in 2010, and created by the violinists Dawid Lubowicz and Mateusz Smoczyński, the violist Michał Zaborski and cellist Krzysztof Lenczowski. All of them graduated from the Warsaw Frederic Chopin University of Music. Since winning the ‘Grand Prix’ of the 13th Bielska Zadymka Jazz Festival in 2011, the band constantly performs at the greatest music festivals of the world. Atom String Quartet is also the first Polish group that performed twice at the European jazz fair ‘jazzahead!’ in Bremen (2015 and 2018). In 2018, the quartet played at New York’s famous Carnegie Hall Voices of the Mountains.

The group has recorded five original discs; Fade In (2011), Places (2012), AtomSPHERE (2015), Seifert (2017) & PENDERECKI (2019) which contains music by Krzysztof Penderecki, the most renowned Polish composer of our times. In addition, they have recorded two albums with the NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra, Made in Poland and Supernova. The band’s discography also contains significant live concert albums with special projects. The musicians of Atom String Quartet are constantly invited to participate in other artists’ recording sessions and have received many awards over the course of their career.
