Julien Tassin Trio, Next.Ape & Sumrrá, leading ensembles of the second week

• The Tenerife Auditorium and the public square los Alisios host the three sessions in Tenerife’s capital city; the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium and Santa Brígida are the venues in Gran Canaria

• In addition, there will be an important presence of local groups, with the Kike Perdomo Sextet, A Few Colors, 2 For The Road and the Orquesta de Jazz del Atlántic

Two groups from Belgium, one from Galicia and four from Tenerife feature in the second week of concerts of the Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz & Más, which will be staged on the islands of Tenerife & Gran Canaria. The concerts begin on Thursday 6 in the ‘Sala de Cámara’ (Chamber Hall) of the Tenerife Auditorium, featuring the trio Sumrrá  with its experimental jazz and liking for improvisation; to be continued on Friday 7 in the same area but in the public square behind the Auditorium, the ‘Plaza de los Alisios’, this time featuring two ensembles from Brussels, the Julien Tassin Trio & Next.Ape; and also the Orquesta de Jazz del Atlántico (Atlantic Jazz Orchestra)  conducted by Natanael Ramos. And to close, on Saturday 8 at the same venue, the well-known saxophonist Kike Perdomo and his sextet will present his new show inspired by the Rain Dance, in a session distinctly Canarian, featuring A Few Colors, a band led by Eliseo Lloreda and 2 For The Road. In Gran Canaria, Sumrrá will perform in the ‘Rincón del Jazz’ (Jazz Corner) at the Alfredo Kraús Auditorium on Friday 7, while ‘Calle Real’ in Santa Brígida will be the venue for the Julien Tassin Trio and Next.Ape.

All the concerts will commence at 20:30 hours. Entrance tickets for the performance of Sumrrá will cost 15€ and they can be obtained via the websites of both auditoriums. For the performances held in the public square ‘Plaza de los Alisios’, entrance is free, but because of limited audience capacity, these are numbered individually and have to be requested prior to the events. They are available at tickety.es. There are no places available for the concert in Santa Brígida.

Sumrrá is made up of three superb musicians who have formed one of the most solid ensembles going, with music that is original, unique, creative and above all with lots of freedom to improvise. At their concerts they present their own truly characteristic sound, potent and full of drama, accompanied by large doses of technique, lyricism, swing and even humour.

The music of Julien Tassin is in the image of the way he plays: sincere, clear and borderless. His guitar tone is gentle and lyrical but wild at the same time. All his compositions are marked by the particular tone of his instrument and his original phrasing, creating an original musical language drawing influences from blues to rock and jazz.

Next.Ape, a quartet based in Brussels, are a psychedelic blend of rock, electronic and trip-hop, at the crossroads of Radiohead, Damon Albarn, Modeselektor, Portishead and Miles Davis. The band has shaped its sound: a slamming snare drum, a deep bass on the Moog, a distorted guitar, some keyboards and of course a clear and charismatic voice.

La Orquesta de Jazz del Atlántico es el buque insignia del Atlantic Jazz Lab. Bajo la dirección de Natanael Ramos, la Orquesta nos trasladará en un fascinante viaje en tren por toda la obra de Duke Ellington, el gran maestro del jazz y el swing. Un total de 15 músicos recorren uno de los repertorios más aplaudidos de todos los tiempos.

Kike Perdomo is one of the most prolific of Canarian jazz musicians with twelve CDs released, many of them featuring collaborations with international artists of the calibre of Bill Evans, Chuck Loeb & Josh Dion.  On this occasion he leads a sextet who will present their own version of the Rain Dance, a ceremonial dance which is performed by people who believe it will cause rain and keep their harvest safe.

Giosy Moltino (vocals) & Franco Nasi (guitar) form 2 For the Road, an acoustic soul duo with lots of Motown artists’ influences and also influences by many other genres, such as jazz, blues and R&B. Their own renditions of some great pieces of popular music featuring Giosy’s powerful voice and the expertise of Franco’s guitar.

Eliseo Lloreda (guitar), Felu Morales (bass) & Pedro Marcos Volf (drums) make up A Few Colors, a trio of jazz fusion & flamenco, and with a disc already on the market titled Hostile Environment, in which the three musicians express with total freedom the music that pleases them.[:]
