Rayko León Quartet
The Canarian pianist, composer & arranger Rayko León continues to produce his own projects. On this occasion he presents a disc performed by a jazz quartet and recorded in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It is the spiritual continuation of ‘A Night in London’, the album recorded in London in 2018 after having performed at various local venues in the city, like the famous ‘Ronnie Scott ́s’.
With collaboration from the maestro Renato D ́Aiello on tenor sax, this recent work builds another new two-way bridge for creative music between the Canary Islands, London, Switzerland & Europe. Although it upholds tradition & jazz forms, the album moves in a different direction to those previously recorded by the pianist, and contains ten original compositions of Canarian inspiration that transits between styles like Afro, Latin jazz, funk, swing, fusion…
Canarian pianist, arranger & composer, graduated from the ‘Conservatorio Superior de Música de Canarias’ (Canarian Higher Conservatory of Music), his musical journey has taken him to play internationally in countries, such as Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, Germany. France, Switzerland, England, Italy, Sweden, Morocco, Spain, Israel … As a composer & musician, Rayko binds together many & varied influences which range from baroque music to modern jazz and fusion, touching on Latin, Cuban, Afro-Cuban & Brazilian music, apart from the traditional type from his native land.
Currently, Rayko combines his work as a teacher & accompanying pianist at the ‘Conservatorio Profesional de Música’ (Professional Music Conservatory) of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with that of studio musician, composer, pianist & arranger of musical ensembles, such as the Gran Canaria Big Band, Perinké Big Band, tribute to Celia Cruz ‘Celia en la memoria’ (with Virginia Guantanamera), and his own Latin jazz groups.
