Pepe Bao
Born in Ferrol (A Coruña) and forged musically between cities like Seville, Malaga & Madrid, Pepe Bao is one of the best bassists in the history of music in Spain.
Known as the founder of the band from Seville ‘O’funkillo’, he has shared the stage with groups, such as Barón Rojo, Obús, Medina Azahara, Raimundo Amador, Marcus Miller, B.B King, Manolo García, Luz Casal, Rosana, and many more. He has formed a group with Carlos Benavent on occasions. It is also worth mentioning that he currently has a project with Tomasito called Majaretas del Planeta.
Winner of the music prize for the best alternative group 2006, winner of several years of awards that accredit him as the best national electric bassist and the prize at the ‘Cante de las Minas’ Festival in 2013 for best flamenco instrumentalist, Pepe Bao is every bit an institution in our country. He has participated at different jazz, blues, funk, and alternative music festivals, as he is an authentic all-rounder.
A unique and unrepeatable figure on the Spanish music scene, Pepe’s a jack-of-all-trades, and plays them all as only the best specialist can in each one because he does so without fear and without prejudice, without anything or anyone limiting him and aided by a technique which has been perfected through continuous practice, that offers him the freedom to express what he has in his mind through the electric bass, directly, with no obstacles in the way.
