Bill Frisell opens the final week of the Festival Canarias Jazz & Más Canarias with two concerts

The Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz & Más Heineken faces its last week with a programme that stages 21 concerts distributed between Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote. US guitarrist Bill Frisell will be the first to feature at these final five sessions with two paid-entrance concerts at the Pérez Galdós Theatre (Wednesday 19th at 21.00 hours), and the Guimerá Theatre (Thursday 20th at 21.00 hours). Entrance tickets for both concerts are priced at 20 euros.
The career of Bill Frisell as a guitarrist & composer is well supported by his many recordings, over a period of more than 35 years, which makes up a discography considered to be one of the most outstanding collections in the world of jazz; from his recent releases, Sign of Life with The 858 Quartet, Beautiful Dreamers, a collection of tracks by John Lennon, titled All We Are Saying…
His latest album, titled When You Wish Upon a Star, was recorded at the Lincoln Center while working on the series Roots of Americana. The disc features the particpation of vocalist Petra Haden, Eyvind Kang (viola), Thomas Morgan (bass) & Rudy Royston (drums). Frisell arranges musical themes from classic film and television, and some unforgettable songs that go to form part of soundtracks covering an entire generation “restructured with much affection”, confirms Frisell himself. The album features a combination of film titles & tracks, like To Kill a Mockingbird, Pinocchio, Psycho, The Godfather, Beauty & the Beast, Moon River ….. and some other tracks like the theme melody from the mythical TV series Bonanza.
Frisell is one of the most recognised & respected jazz guitarrists around. He has composed an eclectic work integrated with progressive folk, classical music, country, noise …. He is known for his use of multiple effects to produce uniquely singular sounds from his instrument. With over thirty discs released, and having participated at the best music festivals in the world and collaborated with some great stars in the realm of popular music, he comes to the Canary Islands accompanied by two exceptional musicians to perform a repertoire of contemporary music classics.
Born in Connecticut, USA, then moved to Brooklyn, Tony Scherr has played in a number of bands, both his own and as member of others, in his own, the Tony Scerr Trio (with Anton Fier & Rob Jost), he performs as vocalist & guitarrist, and playing bass with Bill Frisell and also the band Sex Mob. As studio session musician, Tony recently participated in the recording of the album by Bill Frisell rendering themes by John Lennon, titled All We Are Saying; also with Aaron Neville in a doo-wop LP, titled My True Story, with Keith Richards & Don Was, and the group Iron & Wine with the disc Ghost On Ghost.
Percussionist Kenny Wollesen has performed on more than 30 recordings with some of the most important artists of the 90s, gaining renown as a musician of astonishing versatility, capable of rendering just about any genre with his immense skill on percussion. He has recorded and been a member of many bands and played with all kinds of musicians, from Tom Waits to Sean Lennon to Ron Sexsmith. A founding member of the New Klezmer Trio, he has lately formed part of Bill Frisell’s musical projects.
