Germán López
Germán López is a timple player who since his professional beginnings has been focussed on the sound possibilities of the instrument away from the folkloric field, in a clear commitment to dialogue and fusion with other cultures and artists of different styles. His new album is titled Alma. According to the artist himself, it is a work that opens new sonic horizons in his career, recorded with the prestigious producer from LA, Gregg Field, winner of 8 Grammy awards and drummer with Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald & Frank Sinatra. Gregg has also produced works by Ray Charles, Barbra Streisand, Natalie Cole, Michael Bublé & Jason Mraz.
In Alma, a notable cast of musicians of national & international renown have also collaborated, such as Richard Bona, Jorge Pardo, Antonio Serrano, Josemi Carmona, Alain Pérez, Israel Suárez Piraña, Carlitos del Puerto, Gregg Field himself, Seckou Keita, Cheche Alara, Lila Downs & Aymée Nuviola, among others.
“It is a novelty for a timple player to be able to sign and work with a large company, the prestigious music label of Virgin / Universal”, explains López. “It’s a commitment to the new album (Germán López’s fifth solo since his debut in 2006) and for a very particular project, of world music, that features the timple as the protagonist, and that is only played here in the Canary Islands” emphasizes the musician.
All the records released by Germán López to date have been self-produced, and his incorporation to the record company is backed by the plus of having counted on Gregg Field for the production work. A new phase begins so that, as Germán himself says “other doors may be opened to collaborate with other artists, have better distribution and marketing and, in short, a better placement of my work”.
