Furte

‘Furte’ is a musical duo created by Germán G. Arias & Augusto Báez. Two years ago these two musicians got together to recreate the personal & popular stories that have made a mark on their lives in one way or another. And thus was born Furte’s first work, Historias (Stories). An ensemble composed of nine musicians with two violins, a viola, cello, double bass, drums, percussion, flugelhorn & piano; difficult to label and that move through different styles, all those that also formed part of their lives. ‘Furte’ aims to excite, amuse and recreate in the listener experiences that are common in everyone’s lives.

Augusto Báez is a senior graduate of Piano from the Glinka Nizhny Novgorod State Conservatory in Russia, with the qualification as concert performer, chamber music artist, concertmaster and specialist teacher of instrumental interpretation. He has received the ‘David Williams Jazz’ prize and currently combines his educational activities with participating as a musician in different groups based in the Canary Islands. His regular performances with the Municipal Symphony Band of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Gran Canaria Big band are outstanding. Composer of different works, he has released another three albums, titled Missing you, Piano Solo & Piano Solo Vol. II and has participated in several recording projects.

As producer, arranger & pianist he has worked with Canarian artists such as: Los Sabandeños, Taburiente & Chiqui Pérez and has shared the stage with Germán López, Pedro Guerra, Domingo Rodríguez “El Colorao”, Mari Carmen Mullet, Cali Fernández, José Manuel Ramos, Marvin Santiago, Roberto Blades, Omara Portuondo, Mestisay & Olga Cerpa, amomg others.

Germán Arias studied trumpet, piano & composition at the ‘Conservatorio Superior de Música’ (Advanced Music Conservatory) in Madrid and began playing in symphony orchestras and chamber music groups when he was very young. He made his debut as a professional at the age of seventeen as a member of the Madrid Opera Symphony Orchestra, and it was at this stage that he became interested in jazz & composition. He studied with Carmelo Bernaola, considered one of the greatest exponents of Spanish music in the second half of the 20th century. He later moved to Gran Canaria and enrolled to enter by competition to become a member of the Municipal Symphony Band of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where he is currently artistic director, and continue his tudies of composition with the maestro Juan José Falcón Sanabria.

In his role as artistic director of the Municipal Symphony Band of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, he has conducted at venues in places such as Boston & New York. Composer of a number of jingles & tunes for television & news programmes, mainly on ‘RTVC’, he also composes theatrical works & musicals, La Lengua del Dragón, La Bella Durmiente, Alicia, Perdona Bonita, La Ratonera, El Principito & La Venganza de Don Mendo, some prominent ones among many others, which premiered both in the Canary Islands as well as in Madrid. He is also the composer of numerous events & shows, the overture for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival some 18 years ago being quite outstanding.
