Daniel García Trío

Daniel García has become one of the most original & influential voices of the new generation of Spanish jazz. On this occasion he presents his latest album as a trio “Vía de la Plata”, recorded on German label ‘ACT’, one of the most prestiogious in the world, with the collaboration of big names of jazz & flamenco like Ibrahim Maalouf, Anat Cohen & Gerardo Núñez. The trio is completed by two of the most creative and forward-thinking musicians on the national scene, Cubans Reinier “El Negrón” and Michael Olivera. In this album, the trio reaches full maturity both in compositional and creative matters, contending themselves as being one of the most solid and promising trios in European Jazz.

Daniel García digs deep into the music of his homeland, and combines his influences with the language of the most contemporary jazz trio, without prejudice when it comes to being influenced by other music, from classical & contemporary to electronic music or rock, but at the same time with a highly personal and recognizable delivery. The result is expressive music, with its own brand, in which rhythmic intensity is combined with melodic richness and the harmony refined in music that is lyrical & challenging in equal parts.

Daniel García was born in Salamanca in 1983. From a family of musicians, from the very beginning he was in contact with a wide variety of music, which favoured a musical vision free of prejudices. He graduated from the ‘Conservatorio Superior de Música de Castilla y León’, later moving to Boston, with a scholarship from Berklee College of Music, for two years. There, he received classes from Panamanian jazz pianist Danilo Pérez, who became his mentor and had a decisive influence on his musical development. “Sincerity and self-knowledge are vital in music” – says García – “only in this way can you get to the bottom of things and find your own form of artistic expression, Danilo showed me that path”.

Garcia’s success was not long in coming: in 2011 he received the award for ‘Best jazz performance’ at Berklee, where he performed with musicians such as Arturo Sandoval, Jorge Drexler & Greg Osby. Upon his return in 2011 he became one of the most sought-after musicians on the national scene, working with Javier Colina, Antonio Serrano, Jorge Pardo, Guillermo McGill, Maureen Choi, Antonio Lizana, Ariel Brínguez and Becca Stevens, among others, and producing albums for Mariola Membrives (Lorca Spanish Songs, Karonte 2019), Antonio Lizana (Una Realidad Diferente, Warner 2020), and Antonio Carmona (Obras son amores, Universal 2017), nominated for best album of the year at the 2017 Latin Grammys.

At the same time, he began his creative facet with “Alba” (2014) and “Samsara” (2018), albums that placed him as one of the most original and inspired voices of national jazz.

The experience of playing together for years, makes the musical interaction between Daniel and his partners – Reinier Elizarde “El Negrón – double bass and Michael Olivera – drums, fluid, deep and effective, almost telepathic.

Many types of music come together on Daniel García’s piano. He describes himself as an eclectic musician with influences from styles as varied as Jazz, Flamenco, Rock, electronics, Cuban music, medieval music, Gregorian chant, African music…”and of course, the great variety of traditional music that makes up Spanish culture, especially that of my homeland, which has left its idellible mark on me”.
