Althay Páez
ALTHAY PÁEZ is a young Canarian ‘timple’ (Canarian plucked string instrument) player who among his peers is recognized as a virtuoso of the instrument, both for his technical abilities as well as his language and the feeling he conveys in his live performances. Despite having cultivated these virtues from a very young age, he is currently facing a project of his own, in which tradition and avant-garde are harmonized from a distinctive conceptual perspective within the contemporary ‘timple’ scene.
His first disc, Sostiene Pereira, has been recognized as the best root album at the ‘Premios Canarios de la Música’ (Canary Music Awards) 2021. Recorded between Lisbon and the Canary Islands, the album explores through the timple the compositions of the Portuguese multiinstrumentalist, composer & producer Julio Pereira, who, besides being a renowned renovator of the Portuguese ‘cavaquinho’ (guitar-shaped instrument), is the co´producer of the album.
Among other artists of recognized prestige, Althay has collaborated with Chano Dominguez, Orishas, Raymundo Amador, Iván Torres (Efecto Pasillo), Olga Cerpa y Mestisay, Cristina Ramos, Sole Giménez (Presuntos Implicados), Domingo”el Colorao”, Kike Perdomo and Jorge Glem.
He participated as the Canarian representative at ‘Womad Canarias 2019’ and in 2021 was one of the guest ‘timple’ players at ‘Timple@2021’; an event that gathered together all the main players of that instrument and a commemoration of the show ‘Timples@2000’. He has given concerts in all the main Spanish provinces. On an international level, his live performances have taken him to countries such as Morocco, Mali, Germany, France, Switzerland, Holland, Norway, Prague, USA & Puerto Rico.
He is currently in the pre-production phase of his next recorded album which will have a more personal touch and will include his compositions, showing the maturity & virtuosity acquired in these years, as well as contributing to bring his talent to the evolution of this instrument as unique as the ‘Timple’.
