Alba Serrano & Cristóbal Montesdeoca Dúo
Alba Serrano and Cristóbal Montesdeoca are two Canarian musicians who set off on a musical journey through Brazil, Portugal & Cape Verde. The result is Viagem, their first album together. The venture is defined by its creators as “an extraordinary journey through the influence of Portuguese music in other countries and other styles”. A trip that started in the Canary Islands, then to Cape Verde, to settle finally in Brazil.
The ‘magua’ (disappointment/setback) and ‘saudade’ is a single feeling, shared by all migrant people, the longing, nostalgia of the homeland that is left when leaving. The history of the archipelago is marked by travel & departures and with it, the goodbyes, the memory and hope of returning. “Our ‘magua’ has moved us and accompanied us, has bid farewell to brave men on the ‘muelle grande’ (main pier); has helped us build a genre… ‘Aires de Lima’”, the musicians explained. Alba & Cristóbal verify how migrant people find themselves, through music, a space of sincere communication where the language is universal: the feeling. “The music will make this journey an authentic symphony”, promise the duo.
“Although our musical career paths have taken us both to Barcelona, it wasn’t until the year 2021, on our beautiful island of Gran Canaria, that we got to know each other” explain Serrano and Montesdeoca. “Straightaway we understood that together we were a perfect musical tandem and were searching for the same things on stage: passion & feeling. Hence, we decided to begin this undertaking together”.
The common goal to fuse jazz with all the styles of which both musicians have been nurturing throughout their careers. Their first recorded work Viagem, was cut at ‘Estudio Uno’ (Madrid) and is, according to its protagonists, “an extraordinary journey through the influence of Portuguese music in other countries and other styles”.
For these two musicians of extensive experience the music has been “a bridge of communication between regions, capable of connecting our past with the present”. It starts with the premise that the Canary Islands are known for being a land of transit and, therefore, a place of convergence of different cultures. The history of the Archipelago has been marked by journeys and farewells. “The lyrics of these songs are melancholy & moving, just like ‘Aires de Lima’, they knew how to capture the essence of goodbye in the departure, but with the hope of “we’ll see each other again”, the two musicians agree in their presentation.
