The Sicilian Jazz Orchestra (Orchestra Jazz Siciliana, acronym O.J.S.), is one of the most prominent big bands in Europe, recognized for its musical excellence and its work in the diffusion of jazz. Founded in 1973 in Palermo, Italy, the ‘OJS’ emerged as an undertaking by the maestro Ignazio Garsia with the aim of creating a stable platform for jazz in Sicily. Since then, it has been a role model on the Italian jazz scene, maintaining a clear artistic identity and a deep commitment to innovation and tradition.

Over the course of its history, the Orchestra has collaborated with some of the most important names in international jazz. Artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Phil Woods, Carla Bley, Maria Schneider, Benny Golson & Billy Cobham have shared the stage with the ‘OJS´, contributing their creative vision and consolidating the prestige of the group. These collaborations have led to record productions and memorable concerts that have received critical and public recognition & acclaim.

The ‘OJS’ distinguishes itself by its characteristic stylistic versatility, ranging from the classics of swing and bebop to contemporary compositions and original projects. Its repertoire combines traditional arrangements with avant-garde works, adapting to both the great figures of jazz as well as young emerging composers. This flexibility has enabled the orchestra to remain relevant and constantly renewed in an everchanging jazz scenario.

In addition to his artistic activity, the Orchestra plays a key role in music education and cultural promotion. It is linked to the ‘Brass Group’, a foundation that organises concerts, workshops and training courses in Sicily. By means of this connection, the OJS has contributed to the training of new generations of musicians and the strengthening of a solid jazz culture in the region. Today, the the band is conducted by M° Domenico Riina, whose leadership has been fundamental in maintaining their high artistic level and recognition on the international jazz scene.

The orchestra has also taken its music beyond Italian borders, participating in international festivals and going on tour around Europe, America and Asia. Its global projection has been accompanied by continuous documentation and recording, with albums that reflect both its virtuosity and sensitivity in interpreting different styles and composers.

Nowadays, the Sicilian Jazz Orchestra continues to be an emblem of European jazz, a symbol of the musical talent and passion that emanates from Sicily. Conducted by renowned musicians, it keeps exploring new sonic paths without losing its Mediterranean roots. Its legacy and consistent activity make it one of the most important institutions for the preservation & evolution of jazz in Italy.
