Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 11 de julio de 2024. The Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz & Más Músicas Creativas reaches its second weekend with ten concerts which will be staged in two of the main tourist municipalities of the islands, Adeje & San Bartolomé de Tirajana; as well as the island of Fuerteventura, that will host one of the concerts of the programme in the Palacio de Formación y Congresos (Palace of Training & Conventions) of Puerto del Rosario. Also on Sunday, a new venue will feature in the programme, the Buenos Aires Jazz Café, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
One of the groups with the biggest pull of this 33rd edition is Estrellas de Buena Vista y Más, conducted by tres player Pancho Amat. With its unique style and energetic repertoire, it has taken Cuban music to new heights, fusing traditional rhythms with contemporary influences. The show features the participation of 13 musicians on stage and a repertoire that will recall the golden age of Cuban music, among them, original members of the Buena Vista Social Club such as vocalists Carlos Calunga & Lázaro Villa, percussionist Ángel Terry, saxophonist Javier Zalba & double bass player Pedro Pablo Gutiérrez; completing the group we have vocalists Arahí & Kiko Ruíz, trumpeters Manuel Machado & Alain Pérez, pianist Alejandro Falcón, timbalist Jean Roberto San Cristóbal and Rosenio Perdomo on bongos. This group will stage two concerts this weekend, on Friday in the Palacio de Formación y Congresos (Palace of Training & Conventions) in Fuerteventura and on Sunday in the public square – Plaza de Salytién, in Adeje.
Another artist who always arouses a lot of expectation in his visits to the Canary Islands is the Andalusian saxophonist and flamenco singer Antonio Lizana, one of the most famous representatives of the new Flamenco Jazz of southern Spain. His live concerts are described as a “breathtaking journey from flamenco roots to contemporary jazz”, spun together with his soulful lyrics carrying messages of optimism and sincerity to his audiences. On this occasion he comes accompanied by Daniel García (piano & chorus); El Mawi de Cádiz (Flamenco dance & dances); Arin Keshishi (bass); & Shayan Fathi (drums). His concerts will be staged on Friday 12 in Adeje and on Saturday 13 on the Esplanade of the Faro (Lighthouse) of Maspalomas.
Not that far behind with regard to raising expectations in the bassist from Valencia Vincen García, who comes here accompanied by his regular quintet and was incorporated into the billing just a week ago following the cancellation of KNOWER due to health reasons. Considered one of the most prestigious artists on the current jazz & funk scene worldwide, he is among the ten most listened to bass players globally in terms of streaming, accumulating hundreds of thousands of followers and millions of views and reactions. His new album titled Ventura is receiving an overwhelmingly positive reception in cities around the world such as Madrid, Barcelona, London, Los Ángeles & New York. The band consists of Andoni Narvaez (guitar), Manuel Pardo (trumpet), David Cases (sax) & Jairo Ubiaño (drums). Garciá will perform this Friday 12 on the Esplanade of Faro (Lighthouse) of Maspalomas.
The quintet Sven Rozier & Tom van der Zaal, amped up by vocalist Paul van Kessel, embodies a fusion of jazz tradition and contemporary style. With high intensity energy and a feel-good atmosphere, this band creates a unique musical journey. The playful interaction between Rozier’s drums, van der Zaal’s hard bop lines and van Kessel’s blues voice give rise to magical moments. Each member of the quintet contributes his unique voice, resulting in a lively and dynamic sound which attracts both traditional and modern jazz enthusiasts. With a repertoire that encompasses both original compositions and reinterpretations of jazz standards, the quintet is made up of Tom van der Zaal (alto sax); Sven Rozier (drums); Paul van Kessel (vocals); Marius Beets (bass); Alexander Beets (tenor sax) & Sebastiaan van Bavel (keyboard). They will stage three performances: Friday 12 in Adeje; Saturday 13 in Maspalomas & Sunday 14 at the Buenos Aires Jazz Café.
Closing the cast of artists this weekend is the Yul Ballesteros Trío, who will present their latest album, Alma, which clearly shows the personal and musical evolution of this magnificent guitarist & composer (Friday 12, Maspalomas); and the Fernando Barrios Quartet, a formation which interprets both its own compositions as well as standards arranged within the traditional language of Jazz, although covering different subgenres of this like swing, be-bop, hard-bop, Latin, jazz bossa (Adeje, Saturday 13).
34 ensembles participate at this 33rd Festival Canarias Jazz & Más, a billing that, in addition to those mentioned before, include the getting together of four state-of-the-art musicians such as Potter Mehldau Patitucci Blake and Cécile McLorin Salvant as the main artists, to whom Dave Douglas Gifts Quartet, Veronica Swift, Ana Popovic, Jonathan Kreisberg Quartet, Theo Croker, Polo Ortí New Project, Adèdéji, Aleph Quintet, Loris Tils, Dainius Pulauskas Group, Alto for Two, Germán López, Yone Rodríguez Quartet, Perinké Big Band, Orquesta Jazz de Canarias, D’Local Groove, Mosco Project, GAC Trío, Vanessa Lemoine Quartet, Morgan Hernández vs. Fernikhan backed by Dj Cisco and Sara Lilu & Alesander Peña.
