Canarias Jazz & Más takes a step forward in its sustainability goal, with less energy consumption

The Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz & Más Músicas Creativas continues to advance its sustainability goal, which more than being a commitment is already part of the event’s DNA; the festival will further reduce its energy consumption by adapting their concert schedule to make the most of sunlight, which, in addition to other sustainable mobility measures, energy efficiency & waste management, support the local economy and respect the environment.

This year, the Festival takes this challenge one step further, and brings forward the schedules of the performances to start at 19.30 hours, thus reducing electrical consumption. This measure, which results in substantial energy savings, has been implemented in 37% of the total number of concerts, and in virtually all the performances held in open-air venues on the eight islands.

From 4 to 26 July, ‘Canarias Jazz & Más’ takes music to the eight Canary Islands, but also its message and action in sustainability, that has its roots in the firm commitment to create events respectful to the environment and with a lower carbon footprint. Featuring 31 artists & groups, 59 concerts and 28 venues in 16 municipalities on all the islands, in this edition the festival promotes new measures and consolidates others which are already part of the foundation of the event.

With a track record of 34 years, the festival was born and keeps growing in its aim of providing live music & culture in a more sustainable manner, minimising environmental impact, promoting gender equality, supporting the local community and nurturing sustainable practices in all operations. ‘Canarias Jazz & Más’ integrates environmental sustainability and social responsibility in each & every aspect of the festival, from logistics to staging, promoting sustainable mobility in the collection & transport of artists, with the best combination and minimum environmental impact of C02 emissions in their travel arrangements; while at the same time, either by bicycle, public transport and walking facilities being of prime importance for the local population in the selection of their venues.

The venues are also studied to adapt energy consumption to the needs of the event, maximising the use of natural light and the use of renewable energy, reducing impact to maximum with the implementation of high efficiency LED devices in lighting and supplying     all activities of the festival.

Reduce, reuse & recycle. With this maxim, the festival draws on materials from past editions, conserving resources and reducing waste generation, in addition to installing selective collection containers at all their scheduled events. Yet another year, the festival strengthens its connection & collaboration with ‘Abona(R)’ Campos Culturales de Sostenibilidad (Cultural Fields of Sustainability), a Canarian firm responsible for promoting and providing solutions for sustainable culture.

By means of a QR Code, ‘Canarias Jazz & Más’ will analyze the Carbon Footprint of the festival in order to design the compensation strategy, in collaborative work of which the assistants can play an active part.

In its philosophy of being more than music, ‘Canarias Jazz & Más’ reinvests in the local economy, with a clear commitment to local talent, professionals & companies in terms of implementation and the activities & services required.

On stage, this commitment to local talent is reflected in the Canarian artists & groups included in the billing of this edition, such as Las Albitas (Alba Gil Aceytuno & Alba Careta), La Local Jazz Band, the ensemble Maravijazz led by Augusto Báez, Mónica Santana, Thomas Figueroa Grooving Jazz Project, Luis Sanchez, Esther Ovejero, Anna & Three, Alexis Alonso Sextet, David Minguillón Trío and the Joven Canarijazz Big Band.
