The twentyfifth edition of the Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz & Más Heineken stages four concerts in Gran Canaria & Tenerife; featuring performances by one of the best jazz singers on the Spanish national scene, Carme Canela, and the cross-section of genres that are fused in the repertoire of Banda Magda, who will perform at the Auditorium Square in Tenerife at 20:00 hours.
San Rafael Square in Vecindario is the venue for the other two, featuring Cuban saxophonist Carlos Miyares and his quartet, a musician appraised & backed by maestro Chucho Valdés, and Texan blues singer, bassist & guitarrist Ruthie Foster, kicking off at 21:00 hours.

Carme Canela
This vocalist participates at the Festival in a double role – one as tutor at the Seminario Internacional de Jazz & Música Moderna (International Seminar of Jazz & Modern Music), to be held at the ‘Escuela Municipal de Música Moderna’ (Municipal School of Modern Music) in Candelaria, also to be held in LPGC, and also as leader of her band staging a live performance on Friday in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
She was awarded ‘Vocalist of the Year’ on seven occasions, and received the JAÇ for her CD titled ‘Carme Canela canta a Jordi Matas’ and an award for Catalonian CD of the year given by Radio 4 for ‘Introducing Carme Canela & Trío’ and for ‘Cravo e Canela’.
She comes to the Festival leading a quartet of four musicians-tutors, who are also participating in the seminars. They are: Marc Miralta, drums; Horacio Fumero, contrabass; Albert Vila, guitar and Soren Moller, piano.

Banda Magda
Led by Greek-born singer, guitarrist, pianist, accordeon player, composer, orchestrator & producer, Magda Giannikou, the band’s music moves from Latin-American rhythms to French chanson, from Greek folk tunes to Colombian cumbia and Afro-Peruvian lando, intending in her compositions to encompass all the wonderful and musical diversity that New York induced in her.
Their sound is the sound of world music. The band participated in the album featuring ‘Snarky Puppy’, which won a Grammy award.

Carlos Miyares Quartet
He is one of the most outstanding saxophonists of his native country, Cuba. His aggressive & exhuberant but also simple & lyrical style, is influenced by John Coltrane.
Leader of the band managed for many years by Chucho Valdés, this great pianist endorsed his first solo disc, titled ‘Chucho Valdés presenta a Carlos Miyares’ (2013). A masterful example of contemporary jazz, which came about after a long period of time collaborating with artists like Paquito D’Rivera, Pancho Céspedes, Orlando Valle ‘Maraca’ & Carlos Varela, among others.

Ruthie Foster
Blues singer, bassist & guitarrist, she possesses a superb soulful voice, which can move an audience to tears in a single song. Two of her albums ‘The Truth According to Ruthie Foster’, and ‘Let it Burn’ were Grammy nominations and she was awarded three Blues Music Awards and ‘Best female Vocalist’.
This Texan vocalist comes to the Festival with her latest release ‘Promise of a Brand New Day’, which is neither ‘covers orientated’ nor is it a gospel album, but deeply emotional, and of it Ruthie expresses her complete satisfaction.
