FUNKFARRIA

The musical group “Funkfarria” was formed in the year 2000. The idea to do so came about to musicians from other bands, who all had the same belief that fusion music was their preference.

Following a spate of several years of sharing the stage (as it were), with band musicians with artists like Taller, Malpaso, Livam, Africuya & Zafra, the actual members of “Funkfarria” decided to start a project which had jazz fusion as its base, and with the intention of summarising their preferences using a repertoire based initially on renditions by artists such as The Rippingtons, Frank Gambale, Roy Ayers, Wolfgang Haffner, Metro, Mezzoforte etc. Little by little, they were substituted for their own compositions with these same leanings, getting to the stage today with an extensive repertoire where the group’s themes each time gain more prominence.

After a six-year stint of doing the rounds of the musical scene in the Canaries, which ended in their participation as supporting act on the bill with the acclaimed bassist Victor Wooten at the jazz festival “Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz & Más” in the year 2004, two of the band’s founder members suggested the concept of the challenge that brought about “Funkfarria’s” first recorded work. This carefully thought-out decision was taken following a period in which the group kept maturing in all aspects, as much as in style as interpretation, and at the same time developing their own extensive repertoire, mostly all of which were featured in their live performances.

At the very core of this project are keyboard player Juan Manuel Méndez and drummer Ricardo González, and leave one in no doubt as to their musical preferences, also with a hint or suggestion of the influences that jazz fusion from the west coast of the USA played as much as the legendary funk & rock bands of the 80s and 90s did.

Perhaps the most important facet of this first disc has been the collaboration with other musicians, and the disc has featured the participation of various musicians of top international standing, such as Johann Asmundsson, bassist of the group “Mezzoforte”, guitarrist Bruno Müeller, who is currently working with Joe Sample & Jeff Cascaro, Ykay Ledesma, a renowned Venezuelan guitarrist, saxophonist Felipe Castro, session musician also from Venezuela, as well as German bassist Sándalo López, who settled in the Canaries some years ago.
