Four groups from the Canary Islands who play jazz; four bands presented together under the heading of ‘D’Canarios’ to stage their respective performances on Saturday 23 July, starting at 21.00 hours, in an exclusive concert programmed specially for them.

From the onset, the Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz & Más Heineken was very clear in its opinion & vision that nobody should be envious of foreign musicians, because the Canaries had a large number of its own local talent; and for that very reason, it always allocated a special spot in the programme at their annual event for these bands.

The first of these groups to take the stage in Santa Ana Square is Jazz Coming !!, a quartet consisting of Néstor García, guitar; Juan Antonio Martín, saxophones; Carlos Meneses, contrabass and Suso Vega, drums.

Emotion, lots of intuition and good music are characteristic of this band, who present their repertoire of arrangements of original themes inspired by albums on the ‘Blue Note’ label.
In the preparatory phase of what will be their first recorded work, they have the collaboration of Aridane Martín on the vibraphone and singer Pino Quimont. For their concert tomorrow, Jazz Coming !! will have this vocalist as guest artist.

Their regular gigs & concerts at jazz haunts in Gran Canaria and live performances at the ‘Festival de Jazz Otoño’ (Autumn Jazz Festival) and the ‘Festival Smoke, Jazz & Drink’, among others, have clearly shown the band’s energy & quality played by top-level instrumentalists.

Touché ! will be the second to perform and they present tracks from their first recorded work, titled ‘Pictures’. The members are Jonay G. Mesa, Brazilean seven-string guitar (violão brasileño de siete cuerdas) and Yeray A. Herrera, manouche (gypsy) guitar.

They are not a duo of run-of-the mill guitarrists and their skill in playing these instruments which they individually dominate, enables them to express emotions of diverse qualities, and that joined by an exquisite harmony and subtle melody produce an interesting and wide range of sounds.

This first disc presented by Touché! had been recorded live with a fresh approach and sound that gives it a special added attraction to keep the spectator enthralled. Their compositions don’t deal with any solid structures and are also difficult to categorise in a particular style, thus appealing to a wide range of the public.

Maestro, guitarrist, composer & promoter José Carlos Díaz comes to the Festival accompanied by Alexis Canciano, piano & synthesizer; Alfonso Soto, fretless bass and Óscar López, drums & percussion.

They present the new work by their leader, titled ‘Loud Jazz’, a disc with tremendous expressive force, because José Carlos Díaz has always insisted that for him all jazz is loud and he doesn’t like listening to it with the volume turned down low, and even less playing it. It is on this premise that his new work is based.

‘Loud Jazz’ features a repertoire of his own compositions, new standards & blues, written and played with intense passion and skill.

The Perinké Big Band, conducted with absolute passion by Ximo Martínez, will present their new show ‘Canary Islands Standars’, at the Festival; a series of compositions with arrangements by Rayco León, and featuring the vocals of Moneiba Hidalgo & Lorena Román, and instrumentalists Juan Manuel Alemán (clarinetist & associate conductor of the PBB) and Raúl Bermúdez (violin).

These guest artists and the nineteen musicians that make up the Perinké Big Band will stage a performance evident of a compact band with top-level instrumentalists, who have presented three shows prior to ‘Canary Islands Standars’; these being ‘Desde aquí … ‘(2012), ‘BB-Jazz (Música de Big Band con Esencia de Mujer y Jazz en Femenino’ (2014), and ‘Rock Swing’ (2015).
