The twentyfifth edition of the Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz & Más Heineken returns to the public square Plaza de Santa Ana on Thursday 21 July, for their second open-air free-entrance concert in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, starting at 20.00 hours.

This triple concert features the authentic sounds by the Canarian quintet El Buzo Ruso, which gives us an advance taste of their second album ‘Fives ways to fly’; the utter disparity of genres from Jose James performing tracks from his fourth disc ‘Love in a time of Madness’ and the blues by Texan singer & guitarrist Carolyn Wonderland.

El Buzo Ruso is a band formed by a group of musicians from the Canaries in the summer of 2014, based on original compositions by contrabassist and leader of the ensemble, Javier Presa.
‘Mi charco azul’ is the title of their first album, and now at the Festival, they will present an advance sample of their second pre-production work ‘Fives away to fly’, which they intend recording at the end of the summer.
The groups members are: Elio Moreno, tenor saxophone; Fran Moreno, electric guitar; Fran Godoy, piano & keyboards; Javier Presa, contrabass and José Alberto Dávila, drums.

American singer & composer Jose James has worked with an international group of writers and producers to craft a new sound & style for his fourth album, titled ‘Love in a time of Madness’.
A selection of compositions, recorded on the renowned label ‘Blue Note’, which we will have the opportunity to hear on Thursday 21 July at the Santa Ana Square. Inspired by the influences of Frank Ocean, Usher, Miguel & John Legend, for James, this album is everything he loves about music. “For me it’s all coming full circle”, states this prestigious musician, “I discovered jazz through hip-hop and rap tracks produced by Qtip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Prince Paul, RZA, Rick Rubin and Madlib. So sampling Donald Byrd and Ronnie Laws and working with beat makers is so rewarding”.

R&B has always been present in the work of Jose James. Tracks like ‘Blackeyed Susan’ on The Dreamer and ‘Made For Love’ are proof of this.
In ‘Love in a time of Madness’ the singer expresses harsh criticism on the war against the poor, people of colour, against women, immigrants and innocent children. “Dreams are being shattered and blood is being spilled in the streets. Police brutality is on the rise and human rights and dignity for black people in this country is all but non-existent”, says Jose James.

Queen of the blues Carolyn Wonderland has had nine albums released and her recordings have been critically acclaimed for her powerful voice, compared to that of Janis Joplin’s and her impeccable guitar riffs.
She was awarded ‘Best Female Vocalist’ by the Austin Awards in the years 2009 & 2012, and by the Houston Press Music Awards. Her band was also awarded the best blues band in the year 2009.

Her powerful & soulful voice and skills on the guitar & trumpet, as well as her unique whistling abilities, a talented art in itself, have made Carolyn Wonderland an authentic Texan blues legend.
Daughter of a singer in a band, she began playing the guitar as a mere child in her hometown of Houston, when other girls of her age were playing with dolls. She was influenced both in this city and later in Austin, by Texan blues music of the ‘80s, alongside artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Lou Ann Barton.
